Temescal Roots Project
The Temescal Telegraph Business Improvement District, promotes and nurtures an engaging destination for Bay Area residents, workers, and visitors to experience the Temescal District of Oakland, CA.
In partnership with TTBID and the Dr. Huey P. Newton Foundation, we launched the Temescal Roots Project to create a lasting, public art installation that pays homage to the enduring impact of the Black Panther Party on Temescal, the city of Oakland, and beyond.
March 2022 - December 2023 Oakland, CA
As the project's lead artist, I hosted and produced four public events to engage the community within six months. From attending events to voting on the final installation, 600+ community members participated throughout the project. I also oversaw everything from artist recruitment to project documentation with an ultimate goal of producing a cohesive artistic concept for the installation.
The subsequent six months involved an extensive proposal request process, with nationwide artists vying to lead the project. Ultimately, Oakland artists Gavin Grant, Dana King, and Shomari Smith emerged as the finalists.
In October 2023, we presented the concepts to the community at DHPN’s 3rd annual Pantherfest. We received 380+ feedback submissions on which idea they preferred. Ultimately, Shomari Smith’s 10 Points to Liberation incurred a majority vote from the panelists and community alike, with 57% in favor.
